King's Lynn Triathlon Club members challenged themselves to run an ultra-marathon distance over 4 stages of the Cambridgeshire countryside last weekend. |

For those of us in the know, most triathletes thrive in the warmer spring and summer triathlon season temperatures, but 5 teams of 4 King’s Lynn Triathlon Club competitors came out of winter hibernation and tackled the Hereward Relay over in Peterborough. The Hereward Relay was first run in 1998 when 14 teams took part and has grown with 117 teams taking part in 2018. Hosted by March AC the Hereward Way covers 39 miles, via four stages from Peterborough to Ely crossing over bridleways, fields, bridges, and tracks with this year's stage 4 mud making a wet Glastonbury look like the Sahara with deep mud to tackle. Comprising of Stage 1 from Peterborough to Whittlesey 6.9 miles, stage 2 from Whittlesey to March 10.3 miles, stage 3 from March to Welney 11.5 miles, and the final stage 4 Welney to Ely Football Club 10.9 miles. Our KLTC teams consisted of members and a little help from close friends of the club making this a real team-oriented event. |

Ryan Oakes, one of our newest club members along with his partner Beth Moden quoted,
“Beth tackled leg 3 which is the longest leg out of the 4 11.62 miles with a respectable time of 1 hour 33 minutes” “I decided to hit it head-on and tackle legs 3 and 4 covering a total distance of 22.30 miles in a time of 2 hours 45 minutes” “A lot of the course proved to be tricky being real muddy and slippery, I struggled to find my feet for some of it resulting in falling over multiple times and tasting the mud” “We’re both looking forward to continuing our journey being part of KLTC and tackling many triathlons to come in the 2023 season” |
